Case Summary:

An expert in the field of mathematics approached us at NAILG for his NIW (National Interest Waiver) petition. His proposed endeavor was to utilize statistics, numerical analysis, and high-performance computing methodologies to develop state-of-the-art simulation tools in order to identify predictive mathematical models for use in a wide variety of science and engineering applications. We realized that his work was significant as it helps model complex cellular processes and interactions, including those found in human reactions to Covid-19. Thus our team quickly moved to work on preparing a winning case for him. This meant going through his academic and professional documentation to search for evidence of his work’s importance to the United States. We were soon able to collect the following information:

• Our client’s work enables highly complex simulations to be completed with minimal time and computation requirements. As such, his research is necessary for understanding the spread of the disease (COVID-19) worldwide.
• His proposed endeavor also has broad implications for the United States since the costs of developing newer, more effective drugs have increased dramatically in the United States. His work thus has major implications for the market value and international success of the United States pharmaceutical industry.
• It is due to the national importance of his research that it has been supported with funding from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
• He has completed at least 10 reviews to date and his research has resulted in 7 peer-reviewed journal articles (4 of them first-authored) and 2 first-authored conference papers which have been cited a total of 94 times according to Google Scholar, thereby demonstrating that these publications are widely recognized and relied upon in the field of mathematics.
• At the same time, his work was appreciated by other scholars in his field, 4 of whom all furnished him with letters of recommendation. One of these recommenders said:

“[Client’s] research focuses on the computational simulation of cellular processes. [The client] has developed algorithms that reduce the cost of computation while maintaining accuracy. This is advantageous for the United States biotechnology and biopharma industries for the exploration of drug targets through the simulation of biochemical processes. These simulations help biomedical researchers predict cellular responses in new environments and avoid costly experiments. This, in turn, allows U.S. companies to maintain their dominance in the pharmaceutical market. Thus, [the client’s] research is valuable not just for select industries in the United States, but the overall economy.”
